VIRTUAL NOTEBOOK THE BEGINNING

LESSON 1.1: The first leasson was to create a template on our computer and to save the file as htmltemplate.txt, this was an easy step. From there we created our our first simple html file, using those 4 tag sets HTML, HEAD, TITLE, and BODY (which have both an opening and closing tag).

LESSON 1.2: The next assignment was to begin developing our personal web page, pick a topic and record our beginning thoughts and ideas in the notebook: this is the beginning of my first homepage which is located at:My Home Page. And also to look at web pages of others, I located one I really liked and added the link to the above page: it is called Friends.

LESSON 1.2 PART 2: This part of the assignment dealt with adding tags, these tags included the background color body tag, he linebreak tag, the paragragh tags, using the center tags, and using the header tags. All of which are located on My Home.

LESSON 2.1: This lesson dealt with a recap of what we had learned so far; the questions are as follows:

    (1) WERE YOU ABLE TO USE OR CREATE A TEMPLATE FILE?
    (2) IF YOU WERE ABLE TO USE OR CREATE THE TEMPLATE, WERE YOU ABLE TO SAVE THE FILE AS HTML?
    (3) DID YOU BEGIN YOUR HTML "VIRTUAL NOTEBOOK" AND DO THE EXERCISES AT THE END OF LESSON 1?

In LESSON 2.1: We learned about the the page break and adding the clear atrribute to it which clears the margins to the "left" "right" or "all" of the BR tag, ( this tag has no closing half). The P tags set can be added to, if you add the ALIGN="LEFT, RIGHT, OR CENTER" Then the paragragh will be wrap around a picture or other object. The CENTER tag set centers the test or image in the middle of the page. The B tag set makes bold text, also the strong tag set does, too. The I tag set makes italizied text, as does the EM tag set. The HR tag set creates a line across the page, of which you can specify WIDTH="%", you can also specify ALIGN="LEFT, RIGHT, OR CENTER", atribute you can add is the SIZE="#", and one more attribute you can add is the NOSHADE (NOSHADE should not be in ""marks).

The Hx (x=a number) tag set called the heading tag set in which you place text if you would like to make different sections of your page to have a heading. The PRE tag set is used to for preformatted text. The BLOCKQUOTE tag set is used when you want the margins to be drawn in on both sides of the text. The FONT tag set is used for making the font used on the page different or "jazzier" as my teachers said. Some of the atrributes you can add to this is COLOR=, SIZE=, and FACE=.

Also there is the BIG tag set and the SMALL tag set and they are pretty much self explaintory. The U tag set creates underlined text. The STRIKE tag set strikes through the text example:this is not where is should be. The SUB tag set sets the text below the line:like this, the SUP tag set sets the text above the line like this. The ADDRESS tags are used for setting apart information about the author of the web page,

LESSON 2.2: We begin to learn about adding BODY tags in depth, included among these are BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF", TEXT="#FFFFFF", LINK="#FFFFFF", ALINK="#FFFFFF", VLINK="#FFFFFF". The letter that make up the "#FFFFFF" are separated like this: the first 2 are the amount of red, the second 2 are the amount of green, and the final 2 are the blue, or the RGB value of the color. The other attribute you can use in the BODY tags is the BACKGROUND tag.

The next part of the class dealt with lists: the UL tag set is an unordered list or bulleted list. The L1 TYPE tag which can have the bullet style changed is L1TYPE="ROUND, SQUARE, OR DISC". Example of the list is:LESSON 2.1. This example also includes the OL tag set, too! The L1 tag set is one set that you sometimes use the closing tag and sometimes it isnt required.

The ANCHOR tag set, this tag directs the browser to look at the location you typed for the given HTML document like this: My Home Page this anchor will take you to my homepage. Another kind of "jump to" link that is really useful on your homepage is the "MAILTO" link an example of this is:

GOTO MAILTO LINK

LESSON 2.3: This lesson deals with browser specific tags: BLINK tag set, MARQUEE tag set. The Blink tag set is used only in Netscape, and the MARQUEE tag set is used in Iternet Explorer only. They are sometimes called browserisms.

Also in this lesson we learned about CSS=Cascading Sheet Styles. CSS can perform functions like centering text or changing font color, they can be written so that it affects the whole HTML document (by placing the info to be altered in the HEADING tag of the document, (this is called EMBEDDED SHEET STYLES). Some tags :CENTER, FONT are depreciated (being phased out) by the introduction of HTML4.0 and CSS. The assignment was to create a second HTML document and give it a name, use at least 4 of the HTML tags discussed in section 2.1 - 2.3, add a link from this second document to the first document, and then add a link on the first page back to the second page an example is:Slowly Forward

The second part of this was to answer the questions at the beginning of this lesson:LESSON 2.1. The results of my search for a third type of list: A third type of list took me to a few different sites on the web and also to a few different books one of which was "HTML for Dummies" which was very helpful. A 3rd type of HTML list is the MENU list which defines a pickable list of elements, there is also the DL list which defines a special format fo terms and their definitions. My opionion of the CSS is that it seems like a good and easier way to build HTML documents but still has some browserisms that need repair(help).
